Soldier in the Army of the Lord



This song was played during a video tribute to the past year of God's faithfulness to our church. The lyrics and trigger-happy use of the autotune caused quite a laugh in the sanctuary.

Perhaps it might be wise to ponder a bit exactly what does it mean to be a soldier in the army of the Lord.

The use of the word soldier will no doubt stroke the flames of warfare within our hearts. I would caution against thinking of launching a crusade and war against non-Christians. Too many men have made that mistake in the past.

A soldier of the Lord in simply this:

"Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him."

Rather than pursuing God's enemies, the soldier of Christ pursues God.

He abandons the pleasures this world has to offer and bids them dead to him. His goal is to lead a life unstained by the worldliness that surrounds.

It is crucially important that in pursuing God, he loves rather than pursues God's enemies. For he too, was once an enemy. That is the strange mystery of being a soldier of Christ Jesus.

  For Paul in Ephesians 4:8, clearly there are some changes from the text that Paul is supposedly citing which is Psalm 68:18. Comparing Psalm 68:18 and Ephesians 4:8, it is obvious there are differences. I believe Paul was actually using the LXX but has changed its words for the occasion in Ephesians 4. The LXX version of Psalm 68:18 and Ephesians 4:8 differs by a few words: Psalm 68:18 (it is actually Psalm 67:19 in the LXX): ἀναβὰς εἰς ὕψος  ᾐχμαλώτευσας  αἰχμαλωσίαν, ἔλαβες  δόματα  ἐν ἀνθρώπῳ , Ephesians 4:8 ἀναβὰς εἰς ὕψος  ᾐχμαλώτευσεν  αἰχμαλωσίαν,* ⸆  ἔδωκεν  δόματα ⸀ τοῖς ἀνθρώποις. An Exposition of Genesis 2:24 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Lots can be said about this wonderful verse. In it, we see the actions of God who created the wonderful gift of marriage. Thanks to God, we humans are capable of creating many things but to conceive of something as powerful as marriage is probably beyond us. Through His creative works, God has demonstrated his goodness and awesomeness.
